So Peter came up with this great idea! He thought it would be wonderful to go camp along the coast while Amanda was here. Sounds fun enough, right? Ha! Okay, so it really wasn't miserable but it was a bit obnoxious of a time because of a few reasons:
* the campsites along the ocean where we wanted to stay were all booked
* the only open site was in a campground that wasn't on the ocean and the site was tiny
* it was a bit cold because well, it was the Oregon Coast
* Benjamin has hit his 6 month old growth spurt and screams bloody murder unless he's being fed often
* we borrowed a friends tent to have one big enough for all of us and it took forever to figure out the rain tarp
* Peter nearly ripped off my big toenail when we went to go see the ocean that night, it throbbed terribly
* the people at the campsite to the right had a million kids that were really loud and they were playing loud music
* the people to our left played games and cackled like crazy late into the night
* when Benjamin finally went to sleep (we joined him because we were so tired) it seemed like it was going to be a good night (despite the fact that we were all sleeping on tree roots, but it was the only place the tent would fit)
* at midnight someone's car alarm went off, woke up Benjamin and he woke up screaming until he could eat
* 2 hours later it started raining
* at 6:15am loud, obnoxious birds kept "caa'ing" outside our tent so much so that it woke up Benjamin who wanted to of course, eat.
* we slept for maybe another 45 minutes before getting up, packing up and booking it to the nearest McDonalds for breakfast :-) It tasted SO good
Do I love to camp? Yes. Will I try camping again this summer? I hope so. Will I camp on the coast again? Probably not. It was a bit of an experience with some low points but lots of fun moments. I must say though, we laughed SO HARD at how funny it all was.
Here's a few pictures of our camping adventure and Benjamin's first trip to the ocean.
So excited to be on his first camping trip
Setting up on our site....this was pretty much the whole site right here
Happy to be outside (and out of his carseat!)
Daddy making his famous "lighterfluid fires" :-)
Watching Daddy work his fire magic
Peter roasting his hot dogs for dinner
Amanda was grossed out by the ash touching her hot dogs in the fire so we had to boil hers. DIVA!
A peaceful moment before the loud music, car alarms, rain, and baby screaming :-)
Pacific Ocean near Yachats, OR
It was overcast and a bit cool though not very windy
Benjamin taking in the ocean for the first time
Our little family
Okay Peter, that's close enough of a look!
Love these two!
This series of shots was my stinkin' cute son when he was "going to bed." He was just so happy to play in his playpen inside the tent. It took him at least 30 minutes to wind down from the crazy fun he was having. I couldn't resist sneaking in for a bit of playtime and a few pictures with my little man.
Sure Dad, I'm ready for bed. Hee hee hee.
Amanda and my faces when we realized we weren't getting a hotel and had to sleep on the tree stumps!
Benjamin's warm, though very dorky, pajama outfit
Complete with blue pj's, green hat, white jacket and sock gloves :-)
So happy after the birds woke him up at 6am
Amanda's reaction to 6am? Not so excited. I think she said "I can't feel my back." HA!
The next day we explored the whale cove in Depoe Bay, no whale sightings this time though
Our family of hoodies
Don't throw me into the ocean daddy, I'm sorry I kept you up all night!!!
We then ventured to the beach in Lincoln City. Benjamin's feeling sand for the first time
Oh I love these cute little feet in the sand
I think I'm going to have a sand loving baby!
He'll love it as long as I can convince him not to eat it!
This picture cracks me up
Benjamin looooved playing in the warm "river" part of the ocean. He splashed and was fascinated by the currents. He wasn't a fan of the cold waves (who is?) but loved his warm little pool. He was quite adored by the passerby's. And yes, those thighs are just as big and delicious in person as they are in the picture :-)
All in all, it was a fun and memorable trip to the coast. We could have done without the crazy camping but it was a nice time together. We spent the rest of Saturday at the beach, did a tiny bit of shopping, then capped it off with Olive Garden (complete with 3 FREE desserts for having to wait 40 minutes for our meal. Yum, yum, yum.)
